The Banking Matters Redesign
(Balancing familiarity with a fresh approach) |
|
|
 |
|
In the second half of 2025, the Oregon Bankers Association (OBA) approached Big Red M about a possible redesign of their long-standing magazine, Banking Matters. It was an exciting opportunity to give them a fresh look that reflects the association more appropriately and something they could be really proud of to show off to their members.
Big Red M's Senior Graphic Designer, Jon Cannon, led the project. His approach focused on creating a lighter, more approachable design while maintaining the familiarity OBA members expect.
"My main priority was to really lighten up an otherwise heavy and dense magazine. I wanted to choose new fonts that were easier to read and give them a little more space to exist. Overall, this magazine needed to lighten up and brighten up.
OBA also wanted to explore ways to reference the natural characteristics found in the Pacific Northwest. We used a few different textures throughout to accomplish this and create subtle visual interest. Another benefit of that approach was that we could use color overlays with the texture as section markers throughout without feeling too repetitive.
Finally, we refreshed the OBA color palette. I retained the existing base colors but slightly adjusted and brightened them up. I did want to retain some familiarity with the magazine OBAβs members would already have.
And this is the result! Projects like these are always fun. Everyone learns a lot about the heart of the work they do and itβs a rejuvenating and exciting process. I believe it will be something to be very proud of." |

New Year, New Look
(A rotating design approach to keep things fresh)
You may have noticed the second edition header design of our new campaign leading off this newsletter. Designed by our Graphic Designer, Hope Sudol, weβve introduced rotating banner designs as a way to showcase our teamβs creativity, highlight individual styles, and bring more visual variety to each edition.
Inspired by Googleβs iconic logo treatments, these headers will change month to month, giving us room to experiment, evolve, and keep things fresh for you. |
